Wayne County wildlife control Tip of the Month:

Do All Bats Have Rabies?
There are a lot of reasons to not like bats. These are disgusting, terrifying animals. With beady little eyes, a rat like looking face, and sharp teeth, they are the rodents of the air, swooping down on you in the middle of the night. It is no wonder why so many do not like these critters.

The Carriers of Disease
As if the look of a bat wasn't enough to keep people away from them, these animals are also the carriers of a number of diseases. This includes viruses, bacteria, and parasites. The sad part about this is that you don't even need to come in direct contact with the bat. You don't have to be scratched or bitten by a bat to get one of these illnesses. Just coming in contact with their feces or urine puts you in danger. You may not even know you are in danger. If you are in an area where bats have relieved themselves, their feces and urine can become airborne after they dry. Carried inside the waste are these pathogens and parasites. They can easily attach to your skin or get into your respiratory system and you may have no idea about it until you become ill. It's why you have to be extremely cautious whenever you are in an area where bats are known to live.

Do All Carry Rabies?
While we most often associate rabies with dogs, the truth is that bats carry rabies as well. To contract rabies from a bat you would have to come in contact with the animal, so at least you are safe from its urine and feces in this case. However, no one wants to contract rabies. This is a very serious illness that will lead to death if not treated within the first 24 hours. Because of this, many wonder if all bats carry rabies. The truth is that they do not, but a large enough quantity of them do. According to scientists, about 12% of all bats carry the rabies virus. That means that about one out of every eight bats you encounter could have the illness. Clearly, in some areas of the country it is much more likely that a bat colony will have large numbers of bats carrying the virus. It could be as much as 75% or 80% of the entire colony. That means that in some colonies there are few if any instances of bats having the virus. The problem is that you never know. You can't be sure if a colony has bats with the virus unless you been bitten and of contracted the illness. That is not something you should be willing to put yourself at risk for. Instead, you should treat every encounter with a bat as an instance where the animal may have rabies. You simply have to be safe about this. You can't be sure whether the animal has it or not, and putting yourself in danger is not a good idea. It simply pays to be smart and avoid these animals at all costs.
